A helping hand for trustees
About 700,000 people in England and Wales are trustees of charities. The Charity Commission is there to support them.
One of the most edifying aspects of being a trustee is that you can use your experience and expertise to help your charity met its objectives. Building trust in your charity is vital for its fundraising and delivering on its purpose. It can be a fulfilling and satisfying activity and, while usually voluntary, it rewards many times over.
To navigate the often-complex set of roles and responsibilities, the Charity Commission’s five-minute guides help with everything from managing finance, and reporting and administration, to dealing with conflicts of interest, making decisions and safeguarding people.
Cutting to the chase
While the Charity Commission has produced a lot of resources for trustees in the past, this is the first time it has produced animations. The series of six animated videos, each between two and three minutes long, summarise what trustees might find in the guides found on the Charity Commission’s website.
Scripts were drafted by copy supremo Mark Goldfinch and our partner Brightest Bulb auditioned and recorded our warm, engaging voiceover. Illustrations, storyboarding, and animations were completed by Trafik Productions with us providing overall creative direction.
“The original brief was to create a series of conventional whiteboard videos. Character illustrations of trustees were created in 2021 to raise awareness of the guides. We felt it would be more appealing, and consistent for the brand, to use these to help tell the story. The animations became multicoloured boards with illustrated hands and arms drawing and writing, rather than photographic ones. The voice over needed to be concise and descriptive, which allowed us to add wit with subtle visual metaphors in the illustrations. It was a delight to get across important information in an unexpected way with a brave and thoughtful client.” Lisa Cromer, design director, Brand Ethos
